Finished another winter landscape painting which is set in the mountains and depicts a lovely wood cabin. I think the mark making is a little tight and needs to be looser or more expressive, for some strange reason my style keeps changing like I’m accessing different facets of my creative knowledge or style which gets a little frustrating if it’s not working or very interesting if it is working. I don’t normally paint mountains or buildings so this was a bit of a learning experience for me however I’m not completely unhappy with the work. Traditionally I haven’t painted buildings however I thought that they might add some interest and structure to my work. I used some of the colors in my new Unison Lights set of 18 and find that I really like them and they are great for winter scenes. Pastels used include Terry Ludwig and Unison on Wallis Pro White Paper.

After creating some landscaping paintings of brightly colored trees I decided to paint a woodland scene with softer and more neutral gray colors. I wanted to capture the cool and tranquil atmosphere of the interior of the woodland in the beginning of autumn. I added a touch of warm orange to add a little color to the scene as well. I used artist quality pastels by Terry Ludwig and Unison on acid free pastel paper by Wallis.
I like the contorted shape of this tree and the layers of bright red foliage which really captures the attention and reminds me of my Japanese Maples in the autumn which is a theme I have explored recently. I especially like the warm reds and purples in the cooler months. I also used cooler blues and greens with the warm reds to help balance the colors and make them less dominant and create harmony. I once again used high quality pastels including Terry Ludwig and Unison on Wallis Pro White Pastel Paper which is a high quality paper as well.
Now that the snow is on the ground and winter has set in I wanted to post a nice colorful picture of some maple trees that have turned a lovely bright red autumn color. There is something exciting about the autumn that can inspire a certain vibrancy of spirit in a person who is in connection with the natural world. And yet there is a kind sadness of things passing into the realm of endings until the next rebirth of life, however there are lots of warm and cheerful colors which are a welcome site once the snow is on the ground or even if it’s not in your area.
My materials include artist quality pastels by Terry Ludwig and Unison on the high quality Wallis Pro White Pastel Paper. I don’t spray my paintings due to the color change which darkens and kills the vibrancy and also due to asthma which makes it really difficult to deal with the fumes.
I have discovered that I like working on small seascapes and enjoy the simple, smooth strokes and planes of color involved with the subject matter instead of the more highly textured and detailed forest painting that I normally create. I really like the soft pink in the colours and the soft focus of this painting as well. I used my favourite artist quality pastels mainly Unison and Terry Ludwig pastels on Wallis Pro White Pastel paper which as a sanded surface so that it can hold the pastel dust better and prevent it from falling off.
I have two beautiful Japanese Maples growing in my garden, one is the burgundy Bloodgood Maple that changes to a bright red in the autumn and the other is a small cut-leaf variety called Ever Red which also turns a bright red so I have affection for bright red maples. Therefore I decided to use some vibrant reds and oranges for the foliage of this tree and like the way it turned out. Some of my work is much brighter than it used to be. I used Terry Ludwig and Unison Pastels on Wallis Pro White Paper in the 12×18” size.
I’m trying to simplify my work and make it more abstract by times and decided to try working on a seascape involving much water, mist and rocks. I actually like the ethereal softness of this piece and think that it captures a somewhat melancholy mood. I also like the pink color of the clouds just above the horizon line which has been partially obscured by the fog; I think they lend a nice warm quality to an otherwise cool painting. I used Terry Ludwig and Unison pastels and Wallis Professional White Paper.
I found a spring themed painting I did a few months ago so it might be a little out of season here in the middle of summer but thought I would post about it anyway. Pink is the dominate color and I’m really not sure what these trees are although I think that they might be cherry trees. I wanted to simplify the forms and reduce the amount of detail and make this a little more abstract and I think that I have succeeded with this objective. This puts me in mind of a spring day just when the sun comes out after a rain storm. I used my favourite Terry Ludwig and Unison Pastel combination again including a couple pinks from that scary Ludwig Vibrant set which is taking me some time to get used too however I do like to enliven and warm up my paintings with these colors too.
I thought that this is a nice composition for a waterfall painting since the waterfall isn’t one straight chunk of water but instead it is divided into sections or tiered to create a pleasing shape. I haven’t developed the ability to create rocks as well as I would like and think that I still have some work to do before this really looks like a rock face but I do like the value changes and variation in texture. This is only my fourth waterfall painting so still do need to develop a better technique for creating cascading water and think the color’s in the water are a little patchy looking, I’ll try to remedy the situation in my next painting of this subject matter. I tried to keep the color selection as naturalistic and neutral as possible and think that it works and the shrubbery in the background is only suggested since I didn’t want to distract the eye from the main subject matter.
